Pietro Sciortino epitomizes a new generation of Sicilian artists, his work embodying a mixture of popular tradition rooted in historical culture with an eye to the present. A native of Palermo, he has
exhibited throughout Italy. Some of the themes of his works appear on this site. Pinocchio in Sicily describes the adventure of the
world's most famous marionette as he embarks on a discovery of
Sicilian myth and legend, eventually meeting his kindred puppets
in a Palermitan puppet theatre. The dolls are represented almost
as living creatures. (Which little girl would disagree?) The Capuchin
Catacombs, on the other hand, deal with figures after life. The
brothel series captures the spirit of a social phenomenon that
no longer exists. The Easter Eggs focus on a classic theme.
These are just a few of the series created by a unique artist,
and only a few works from each series are shown here. Pietro Sciortino's
gallery and workshop is located on Via Bara all'Olivella between
the archeological museum and the Teatro Massimo in central Palermo.
